Feadán Fountain Pen handmade in Irish Yew | tree of everlasting life
We designed our Feadán <Fa-don> pen range so routine writing tasks become infinitely more enjoyable; utilising a simple and minimalist form, we pay homage to the beauty of the wood we craft from; the wood's utterly original character gives certainty that each Feadán is unique. Feadán is the Irish word for tube, and the shape and function of a tube is to allow unfettered movement within it; a Feadán is a tactile conduit enabling the unfettered flow of feelings to paper for the intimate writing task that is anything but routine when words and emotion are so expressive that they need to be shared as has always been the way in Irish literary heritage, holding a pen made from wood grown in Ireland is a beautiful way to connect with that heritage.
The Irish Yew in this pen has played a tremendous role in shaping religious beliefs, being associated with immortality and rebirth or a spiritual resurrection. To the ancient Celts and Druids, it was a sacred tree and adorned many of their religious sites. Churches were often built on these ancient religious sites and inherited the yew trees already there - one can find a yew tree in many a churchyard.
Muckross Abbey has a huge Yew tree in the middle of the Abbey’s cloister. It was planted when the friary was first built in 1448 by Dónal McCarthy Mór – the chieftain of the area. That same tree can still be seen and enjoyed today – it’s an old Irish Yew tree.
One fact is certain; however, trees, including the yew, were, like the Sun and Moon, instrumental in the formation of just about all literary and religious traditions and a major inspiration to many artists. It seems that the 'wise' was always associated with trees.
The tubular design is very tactile; holding the pen has a playfulness to it, and lining up the wood grain each time the cap is posted is fun and addictive.
Laying or standing on a desk or resting on a notepad at a meeting, the Feadán will be noticed, but as with all good design, form must follow function, so we installed a size 6 Peter Bock nib as standard; the pen also takes an ink pump and international.
We also make this pen as a ROLLERBALL PEN- have a quick look
As a personal, corporate or club gift, no other pen in the world is exactly like yours!
Sustainability is high on everyone’s agenda; by using one of our handmade pens and only replacing the refill you help the environment by not contributing to the BILLIONS of plastic biros that go to landfill every year.
Give one of our fountain pens with our ink pump; the only thing you don't use is the empty glass ink bottle that is recycled; how green is that?

A gift for my friend who loves to write, a fussy guy but this pen gave him no area for complaint. He is very impressed with the nib and ink flow, loves the finger grip and how light it is to hold. He finds he is using it to point things out to people when capped, almost like a pointer! He loved the grain in the wood and the fact it is handmade. Oeder No.2 is on the way soon.
Hi Seamus, I remember how concerned you were about how the gift would be received, I am delighted it went down so well. Hard to beat the visual impact of the grain in the Irish Yew. Looking forward to working with you again on your next gift. Richard
