Sustainability and Irish Pen

Sustainability at Irish Pens

At Irish Pens, sustainability is part of how we work every day in our family workshop in Kells, County Meath. Since 2016, we have focused on creating handcrafted Irish writing pens designed to last, designed to be refilled, and designed to become meaningful keepsakes rather than disposable products.

Responsibly Sourced Irish Wood

We primarily work with fallen Irish timber, reclaimed and wind-fallen wood, and historic Irish Bog Oak naturally recovered from bogland. We do not harvest forests to produce our pens.

Every piece of wood already has its own history before it reaches our workshop. Some of our Bog Oak materials have rested underground for thousands of years before being responsibly recovered and transformed into writing pens that can be used and appreciated for generations.

Our approach is simple:
We work with timber that nature has already offered, giving Irish wood a second life as a lasting handcrafted writing pen.

Refillable Pens Designed for Long-Term Use

Our pens are designed to be refillable rather than disposable. By using replaceable refills, converters, cartridges, and standard international writing components, our pens help reduce unnecessary waste while encouraging long-term everyday use.

We believe a well-made writing pen should last for years — not weeks.

Supporting Native Irish Tree Planting

As part of our ongoing commitment to sustainability, a portion of every sale at Irish Pens contributes towards the planting of native Irish trees through the Tree Council of Ireland tree sponsorship scheme.

This allows our customers to support both Irish craftsmanship and the future preservation of Ireland’s natural landscape.

Every Irish Pens order helps support native Irish tree planting.
A small contribution from each sale goes towards helping new native trees take root in Ireland.

Small-Scale Irish Craftsmanship

Irish Pens is a husband-and-wife family business, not a mass-production factory. Every pen is individually handcrafted, assembled, polished, inspected, and packaged in our workshop in Kells, County Meath.

Working on a small scale allows us to minimise waste, carefully manage materials, and maintain a strong connection between craftsmanship and sustainability.

Sustainable Packaging and Meaningful Gifting

We continue to improve our packaging with a focus on reusable presentation, reduced waste, and long-term quality.

Our pens are often purchased as gifts for retirements, graduations, anniversaries, corporate presentations, and personal milestones — meaningful occasions where lasting quality matters more than disposable products.

Creating Products That Are Made to Last

One of the most sustainable products is one that people continue to use and value for many years.

At Irish Pens, we create refillable Irish writing pens intended to be kept, reused, repaired, and enjoyed long into the future.
