Shannon Bog Oak Eclipse fountain pen in Eclipse Black, chrome, and gold accent trim.

Shannon Eclipse Pen handmade from Irish Bog Oak with black Chrome and gold trim

The wooden body of your pen was hand-turned, assembled, and posted, all from our workshop in Ireland's heritage capital, Kells County Meath, by Catherine & Richard Daly.

  • The wood in your pen:

Irish Bog Oak rests at the heart of your hand-crafted pen — a wood unlike any other, steeped in a history that reaches back over 5,000 years, older even than the Pyramids themselves. Hidden in Ireland’s soft, peaty soil for millennia, it emerges darkened, hardened, and rich with the quiet strength of time.

There’s something deeply moving about holding a piece of this ancient world in your hand — the weight of it, the texture, the deep, dusky tones whispering stories from long before our own. To honour that heritage, your pen has been lovingly finished with the finest beeswax, just as Irish sculptors have done for generations — a gentle, time-honoured method that lets the wood breathe and shine.

As the craftsmen of old shaped beauty from this sacred timber, may this pen stir your own creativity — a humble but powerful connection to Ireland’s enduring spirit and timeless artistry.

  • The trim of your pen:
The trim is Eclipse Black chrome and gold, which complements the beautiful blackness of the bog oak

  • How to fill the pen with ink

To insert the ink cartridge, unscrew the nib section from the pen and push the ink cartridge into the section until you feel it click into place. A gentle squeeze of the cartridge may be required to get the ink flowing for the first time.

If using the ink pump, fit it to the pen in the same way as the cartridge and twist the plunger to expel all the air from the reservoir, place the size 6 medium nib below the ink level in the ink bottle and twist the pump to draw up ink from the bottle, dry off any external ink, you can now reassemble the pen and you are ready to start writing. Use gloves to protect your hands from the ink, and tissue to protect the area from spills. Don’t forget to put the cap back on the bottle!

Keep the cap on the fountain pen when not in use to prevent the nib from drying out. As with all fountain pens, you can flush the nib and feed to clean them if you notice a change in the ink flow over time. See our website for a video on how to do this.

At Irish Pens, we are delighted to pay homage to the woods at the heart of our handmade pen by sponsoring the planting of Native Irish Trees in the forest of Avoca, Co. Wicklow, Ireland, through the Tree Council of Ireland's tree sponsorship scheme. A proportion of the sale of your pen has made this possible.

The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago; the next best time is now.

  •  The pen case:
We supply your pen in a stylish black pen case that will protect it and ensure it is always at hand for use. We moved away from single-use pen boxes because putting a pen box in the bin is not part of our philosophy of reducing waste wherever possible.

We post our pen in a Jiffy Green padded mailer with no bubble wrap, and the bag that holds the pen and the information card is fully recyclable.

Over 4 Billion plastic pens and their packaging go to landfills in the USA alone every year, so when the refill is empty, simply change it and keep using your pen. Its all the small things we do that help the environment.
