Grove Ballpoint Pen handcrafted from Burled Irish Elm with Rhodium and Black Titanium trim – Irish Pens handmade in Kells, Ireland

Your wooden pencil body was hand-turned and assembled by Catherine and Richard Daly at our workshop in Ireland's heritage capital, Kells, County Meath.

  • The wood in your pencil:

At the heart of your hand-crafted pencil lies Irish Burled Elm — a rare and treasured wood, found only in quiet corners of our land. Its grain swirls and dances in patterns that seem wild and whimsical, almost as if nature herself decided to scribble her thoughts across the surface. There's a kind of beautiful chaos in its lines — no order, no rules — just pure, natural artistry that makes each piece utterly unique.

This particular elm comes from the gentle midlands of Ireland, where time moves a little slower. We were fortunate to receive it from a retired clockmaker, a craftsman who had spent over 30 years collecting offcuts of this elm — pieces too small for his delicate work, yet too lovely to discard. In his hands, they waited quietly all those years, until they found new purpose in ours.

Now, that same wood lives on in your pencil — a small piece of Ireland’s story, full of character, history, and heart.

  • The trim of your pencil:
The trim is Black titanium and Rhodium, which complements the beautiful colours of your burled elm.
  • The refill in your pencil:

Your pencil uses a Parker-type lead refill to house the .7mm replacement leads. The .7mm leads are widely available in all good stationery stores.

How to change the refill

At Irish Pens, we are delighted to pay homage to the woods at the heart of our handmade pen by sponsoring the planting of Native Irish Trees in the forest of Avoca, Co. Wicklow, Ireland, through the Tree Council of Ireland's tree sponsorship scheme. A proportion of the sale of your pen has made this possible.

The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago; the next best time is now.

About Your Presentation Box

Each pen is housed in a satin-lined luxury case and sheathed in a plush black velvet pouch, offering a refined unboxing experience worthy of its heritage..

Over 4 billion plastic pens and their packaging end up in landfills in the USA alone every year, so when the refill is empty, simply replace it and keep using your pen. It's all the small things we do that help the environment.
