The Bishop and the Bible

Bishop William Bedell, Bishop of Kilmore and Ardagh in 1629 was famed for making the first Gaeilge translation of the Old Testament. He spoke seven languages when he came to Ireland and as everybody here at that time spoke Irish, so he learned Irish! Now the bishop lies in a tomb in the old Kilmore cemetery Cavan 5 minutes from our workshop. What is said to be the oldest tree in Cavan is this sycamore reportedly planted in 1632 by Bishop William Bedell. We were honored to be presented with wood from a branch that fell from the tree over 20 years ago and we have made pens from it for visiting dignitaries and local clergy. We can make any...
